Kandy is most prominently referred to as 'The Cultural City' of Sri Lanka. It was originally called Senkadagala Pura until a colonial ruler changed its name to Kandy. The word 'Kandy' is derived from 'Kanda', which means 'hill'. The place is known for its massive cultural parade (Kandy Perahara), which is organized every year in the month of July or August. The pageant travels across the city for seven consecutive days with the sacred tooth of Lord Buddha, escorted with numerous drummers, dancers and ornamented elephants. It finishes off on the full moon of the month of August.
